Publishers Unite — Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to the most common questions about the Publishers Unite initiative, our collective goals, and how you can join the movement to protect your content.
What is Publishers Unite?
Publishers Unite is a collective initiative designed to bring together 1,000 small and mid-sized publishers to act as a unified voice in the emerging market for AI and large language model (LLM) content licensing. By joining together, publishers can negotiate fair compensation and responsible use of their content through a single, coordinated licensing framework.
Why should my publication join?
Individually, small and mid-size publishers have limited leverage in negotiating with large technology companies and AI developers. Together, we represent millions of articles, stories, and data points, which are the very material that powers AI training.
By joining Publisher’s Unite, you gain:
- Collective bargaining power with AI companies that would otherwise overlook individual publishers.
- Access to fair compensation for use of your copyrighted content in AI model training.
- A voice in shaping industry standards for responsible AI data usage and transparency.
- Legal and negotiation expertise that would be costly to obtain independently.
Is there a cost to join?
No. Membership in Publishers Unite is completely free. The initiative is funded through collective licensing agreements and potential future revenue-sharing models. There are no membership fees or hidden costs.
What are the obligations of joining?
Joining simply means you agree to be part of the collective and receive updates about licensing negotiations. There are no binding commitments to participate in any specific deal. Members always retain the right to opt out of any contract or negotiation if they choose.
What kind of deals will Publisher’s Unite negotiate?
Publishers Unite will negotiate collective licensing agreements with technology companies developing or deploying large language models, such as AI chatbots, search systems, and summarization tools. The goal is to ensure that when these systems use publishers’ content for training, summarizing, or generating derivative works, publishers receive fair compensation and recognition.
Can I still license my content independently?
Absolutely. Joining Publisher’s Unite does not restrict your individual rights to license your content separately or directly with other companies. The collective simply provides a unified option for broader, large-scale negotiations.
How does opting out work?
If Publisher’s Unite begins negotiating a specific contract, all participating publishers will be notified in advance. You’ll have full details of the negotiation and can opt out easily if you prefer not to be included. Opting out of one agreement does not affect your membership or eligibility for future negotiations.
Who runs Publisher’s Unite?
Publisher’s Unite was founded by Creative Licensing International , which is made up of seasoned licensing professionals with more than 100 years of combined experience in publishing, licensing, and intellectual property. The organization operates transparently, with advisory input from participating publishers to ensure fair representation of all members.
What kinds of publishers can join?
Publishers Unite is specifically designed to organize BtoB publishers producing STM, financial and engineering content, however, we welcome all small and mid-sized publishers, including news outlets and online magazines, trade and industry publications, educational, cultural, or non-profit publishers and specialty and independent digital publishers
If your organization produces original written content, you qualify to join.
How do I join?
Joining is simple — just fill out the short membership form on our website. Once confirmed, you’ll receive a welcome packet explaining membership details, updates on upcoming collective actions, invitations to member briefings and discussions.
There is no cost and no obligation beyond staying informed and deciding which negotiations you want to be part of.
Why is collective licensing important now?
AI developers are training large language models using vast amounts of online content, much of it created by publishers like you. Without a unified approach, small and mid-size publishers risk being left out of compensation discussions entirely.
Collective licensing ensures your work is protected, valued, and compensated, and that you’re part of shaping how AI interacts with human-created content.
What’s the ultimate goal of Publisher’s Unite?
Our mission is simple to ensure publishers are fairly compensated and respected in the AI era. By reaching 1,000 members, Publishers Unite will represent one of the largest organized groups of publishing rights-holders in the world, a collective powerful enough to negotiate equitable terms with global technology companies.
